Chapter 2

Leon took his first step onto the stairs, then another. Minette whispered, “Goodbye,” and shut the door behind him.

He stood where he was for a moment, looking down into the gloom, waiting for his eyes to become adjusted to it.

He started his descent again. The steps were wooden and creaked beneath his feet, the narrow walls on either side of him were panelled in dark wood, but further down it looked as if the wood gave way to stone walls of a warm and creamy, porous yellow.

He wondered when he would meet someone; he was beginning to feel self-conscious about his nakedness.

He reached the yellow walls; now the steps were of the same stone too. They were wider than the wooden steps had been, and sloped slightly. It seemed as if he had descended to a cave beneath the house. The tunnel curved to the left as if went further down, and instead of getting darker, it looked to him as if it became brighter the further down it went.

Now the floor beneath him sloped more gently and the walls as they curved opened out until the space around him was more like a room than a tunnel. Then he went under an arch, past which the space opened out further into a cavern the size of a large room, suffused with yellow light and filled with the whispered roar of the nearby sea. In the centre of this space was the stone fountain which he had seen from the master bedroom, the floor of its pool decorated with a mural of patterned tiles.

It seemed to be a natural space, formed over long ages by the slow action of dripping waters. The roof was undulating and the walls were riven with smooth nooks, but also the hands of humans had added to the work of nature and carved the soft stone with pillars, pediments, and architraves in half relief, framing the larger nooks and recesses with decorative classical elements, as if in ages past these caves had served as catacombs.

In the centre of this space, reclining on a hammock strung from one end of the cavern to another, was the slim woman with the small breasts he had seen reflected in one of the facets of the mirror. She sat up when she saw him, looking him up and down from dark, curious eyes. She had short hair of a nondescript brown, and a lively, intelligent face. Her nipples, which had been hard and pointed when he had watched her through the mirror, were now small again, of a size in proportion to her small breasts. Her pubic hair was brown, bushy, wiry, and extensive.

She said, “You must be the new boy?”

“Yes, I’m Leon.”
